What are the differences between high-voltage circuit breakers, isolating switches, and high-voltage load switches?

Isolating switches are a specialized type of knife switch that lack a dedicated arc-extinguishing device. As a result, they cannot be used to connect or disconnect load currents or short-circuit currents—they are designed strictly for operation under conditions where the electrical circuit is already broken. Their primary function is to isolate the power source, ensuring a clear disconnection point between the energized system and any de-energized electrical equipment. High-voltage circuit breakers, also known as oil switches, are equipped with reliable arc-extinguishing mechanisms, enabling them to safely interrupt no-load currents, load currents, and short-circuit currents. These devices can be remotely controlled and automated via control systems and relay protection systems, making them widely used across various voltage levels in high-voltage power systems. High-voltage load switches serve a role somewhere between that of a high-voltage circuit breaker and an isolating switch. They are capable of switching both load currents and overload currents. However, since they do not have an arc-extinguishing feature, they cannot handle short-circuit currents.

Does a high-voltage load switch require an operating power supply?

1. High-voltage load switches typically do not come with an operating power supply and instead rely on manual operation. These load switches and combined switchgear units primarily consist of a frame, an isolating switch (with the current-limiting fuse of the combiner located on the isolating switch), a vacuum switching tube, an earthing switch, and a spring-operated mechanism. 2. High-voltage load switches are available in both manual and electric versions. If the switch is manually operated, no additional power supply is required. However, if it’s electrically operated, an external power source becomes necessary for activation. 3. Most high-voltage load switches use manual energy storage for operation, though electrically operated models are also available, albeit less commonly used. The primary reasons for preferring manual operation include reduced equipment complexity, lower maintenance requirements, and cost savings. In cases where both manual and electric operation are supported, an additional control power supply would be needed to enable the electric functionality.
