Yunfeng Technology Analyzes the Installation of High-Voltage Isolating Switches

High-voltage disconnect switches are critical switching devices in the electrical systems of power plants and substations, designed to be used in conjunction with high-voltage circuit breakers. Their primary function is to ensure safety during maintenance operations by isolating voltage—essentially acting as a physical barrier to prevent accidental contact with live components. However, these switches are **not** intended for interrupting or making load currents, nor are they suitable for breaking short-circuit currents. Instead, they can only handle certain switching tasks that don’t generate powerful arcs—meaning they lack arc-extinguishing capabilities. Depending on the installation location, high-voltage disconnect switches are classified into indoor and outdoor types. Based on the number of insulating pillars, they come in single-column, double-column, and three-column designs, with each voltage level offering a range of compatible equipment options. When installing outdoor high-voltage disconnect switches, ensure they remain horizontally positioned to allow the porcelain insulators with skirted bases to effectively repel rainwater. For indoor installations, the switch should be mounted vertically, with the stationary contact located at the top. If equipped with a bushing, it can be installed at a slight angle. In this setup, the stationary contact connects to the power source, while the movable contact is linked to the load. Finally, it’s crucial to securely connect both sides of the high-voltage disconnect switch to the busbar and cable grounding system. When copper and aluminum conductors come into contact, always use specialized copper-aluminum transition connectors to prevent galvanic corrosion, which could compromise performance and longevity.
